David Moyes marked his first signing as Manchester United manager on Friday as the Premier League champions confirmed the arrival of Uruguay defender Guillermo Varela.
Varela will provide competition for the likes of Rafael and Fabio da Silva, Patrice Evra and Alexander Buttner.

“Manchester United is pleased to announce it has reached agreement to sign 20-year-old defender Guillermo Varela from Uruguayan club Atletico Peqarol for an undisclosed fee,” a statement on United’s website confirmed.
The France star is on holiday this month and said: ‘I will let my agents work for me.’
Cabaye, linked with a move to Manchester United or Arsenal, said he is ready for a fresh challenge after Newcastle’s brush with relegation last season.
“After that, I’m going on holiday and it can’t come soon enough to clear my head of the difficult season we have just had.
“I have had no direct contact with anyone. Maybe my agents are in the know. As for me, I am here, listening. I like England as well.”
Newcastle rejected interest from Arsenal and Tottenham last summer and Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco would take the midfielder back to France.
Owner Mike Ashley and boss Alan Pardew will resist any renewed interest in Cabaye, and also plan to keep Papiss Cisse, linked with a move to Russia, Cheick Tiote and keeper Tim Krul. They are struggling to keep hold of captain Fabricio Coloccini.
Cabaye, 27, is on Manchester United boss David Moyes’s wanted list.
Asked if he would be keen on Old Trafford, Cabaye added: ‘Yes, of course, I have liked that club for a long time. I like what they do.
‘The boss (Sir Alex Ferguson) has left, but they have appointed a very good successor and he did some very good things with Everton.
‘They are always well placed among the big clubs. Yes, it could be an interesting challenge but as I said, for the moment there is nothing concrete. I am still at Newcastle.’
Meanwhile, Manchester City have axed another Mancini; this time, Roberto’s son. Filippo Mancini, 22, has followed his father out of the Etihad Stadium, as confirmed yesterday when the Premier League unveiled the list of players officially released by their clubs.
But Mancini is not the most high-profile, and certainly not the most expensive player to have been dumped yesterday.
Arsenal’s most expensive signing Andrey Arshavin, who cost the Gunners £15m, has left the club. He is joined by Sebastien Squillaci and Denilson, among 14 players released. Local rivals Spurs have released William Gallas and David Bentley.
Yossi Benayoun, Florent Malouda, Paulo Ferreira and Hilario are among eight players let go by Chelsea.
New boss Mark Hughes will be without long-throw specialist Rory Delap at Stoke, as well as Jermaine Pennant, Dean Whitehead and Matt Upson.
