Vilanova, Midfielder wa zamani, alikuwa akiugua ugonjwa wa saratani ya koo kwa zaidi ya miaka 2, ugonjwa uliomlazimisha kuachia ngazi kama boss wa Barcelona.
Vilanova alichukua madaraka kwa Guardiola mwanzoni mwa msimu wa 2012/2013, lakini alilazimka kuchukua likizo ya miezi minne kati ya December 2012 na April 2013 kwa ajili ya matibabu nchini Marekani, na kutibiwa.
